1. Persistent Low Fever

Name: Fu.

Sex: Female.

Age: 24 years.

Occupation: An attendant.

Chief Complaint: Persistent fever for 2 weeks.

History of Present Illness: Two weeks ago, the patient had a fever without any obvious causes. It wasn't accompanied by sore throat and rhinorrhea, there was occasional dry cough. When the fever occurred, the temperature waved between 38 and 39. Furthermore, the fever always occurred in evening and night, accompanied with lassitude, fatigue, flushed complexion and feverish sensation over the palms and soles. She had been to a hospital and was treated by inlravenous dripping "Benzylpenicillin, Cefradinum, Ribarizin and Amikacini" for 2 weeks, but there was no curative effect on her. Then she came to our hospital for treatment on May 15,1998. There was not other complaint.

Physical Examination: The temperature was 38. 5. The patient was conscious with a flushed complexion. The pulse was thready and rapid. The tongue was thin and red with reduced saliva. There was not other abnormal sign.

Diagnosis: Persistent Low Fever.

Differentiation: It's fever due to deficiency of Yin. In TCM, the low fever occurring in evening and night is the most typical character of the fever due to deficiency of Yin. The deficient Yin couldn't support the normal functional activities of Yang and then the pathogenic asthenic fire floated up again and again. So the patient got the persistent low fever.

Therepeutic Principle: Nourishing Yin and clearing away the

pathogenic heat.

Recipe: Pills of Anemarrhenae,Phellodendri and Rehmanniae.

ZhiMu,Windweed Rhizome 15g

HuangBai, Phellodendrom Bark 15g

MuDanPi, Tree Peony Bark 20g

ShuDiHuang,Prepared Rehmannia Root 18g

ShanYao,Chinese Yam Rhizome 15g

FuLing, Tuckahoe 10g

ZeXie,Oriental Water Plantain Rhizome 12g

ShanYuRou,Dogwood Fruit 18g

All the above drugs were to be ground into fine powder and mixed with some honey to make pills, taking 9g of the pills each time,3 times a day. Hot and greasy food was forbidden during the treatment.

Effect Observation: After 1 day's treatment, the fever disappeared. She was told to continue taking the pills for half a month totally. After 1 month's follow up, the illness didn't recur. Then it's ending.
