Exercises in the Tenth Month

The tenth lunar month of the year belongs to hal, last in the twelve earthly branches, and in addition corresponds to the Liver Channel of Foot-Jueyin in the jingluo system and kun in the sixty-four hexagrams. Kun stands for submission which means that you should adapt yourself to nature. What you should bear in mind is that qi arises at 5 p.m. and you'd better face west in practice. Be sure to go to bed early and get up late in this month so as to warm and nourish shen and qi and ward off pathogenic factors.

(1) Lidong (the Beginning of Winter)

The time between 1 and 5 a.m. every day in this month is good for the following exercise. Sit cross-legged with left hand on left knee and right hand on left elbow. Turn body to the left and right and look side-ways. Return to the starting position and repeat the turning movement 15 times on each side. Then push palms forward 15 times and look sideways. Click teeth and inhale and exhale before swallowing saliva.

This exercise is good for stagnancy in the chest and hypochondrium, pathogenic factors, lumbago, oppressed feeling in the chest dysphagia, hypoacusis, edema in the face and ophthalmagia.

(2) Xiaoxue (Slight Snow)

The time between 1 and 5 a.m. every day in this month is also good for the following exercise. Sit cross-legged with left hand on left knee and right hand on left elbow. Pull left hand to the left and right hand to the right. Return to the starting position and repeat the pulling movement 15 times on each side. Click teeth and inhale and exhale before swallowing saliva.

This exercise is effective for pathogenic wind-dampness, noxious heat, distention and pain in the lower abdomen, acute asthma and blood stasis.
