Exercises in the Sixth Month

The sixth lunar month of the year belongs to wei, eighth in the twelve earthly branches, and in addition corresponds to the Lung Channel of Hand-Taiyin in the jingluo system and dun in the sixty-four hexa-grams. What you have to bear in mind in this month is that qi arises at 9 a.m. and you'd better face south. Do not regulate yin and yang in a forced way because the former is weak and the latter strong.

(1) Xiaoshu (Slight Heat)

The time between 1 and 5 a.m. every day in this month is good for the following exercise. Sit on left foot with hands touching bed behind the back. Extend right leg and withdraw it forcefully. Return to the starting position and repeat the straightening and withdrawing movements 15 times on each side. Then, sitting with legs crossed, click teeth and inhale and exhale before swallowing saliva.

This exercise is effective for pathogenic wind-dampness in the leg and lower back, lung distention, dry cough, hemiplegia, abdominal distention and pain, asthma, prolapse of rectum, asthenia and mental change able-ness.

(2) Dashu (Great Heat)

The time between 1 and 5 a.m. every day in this month is also good for the following exercise. Sit cross-legged with fists touching bed. Turn head and lift shoulders before looking backward. Return to the starting po-sition and repeat the whole process 15 times on each side. Then click teeth and inhale and exhale before swallowing saliva.

This exercise is effective for syndromes in the neck, chest and back caused by pathogenic wind, cough, asthma, thirst, fullness in the chest, pain in the upper abdomen, shoulder and back, apoplexy, difficulty in micturition, sore skin and amnesia.
