10. Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis

Case 1

Name: Tong.

Sex : Female.

Age: 24 years.

Occupation: A teacher.

Chief Complaint: Pain of mouth for 1 week.

History of Present Illness: One week ago, the patient got a pain in the inside of mouth. Eating and drinking could aggravate the pain. In the local policlinic, the illness was diagnosed as "Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis" and she was treated by oral taking "VitC, VitBco" and "the pill of Calculus Boris for Detoxification" for 6 days, but there was no effect on her at all. Then she came here for treatment on May 7,1997.

Physical Examination: The patient was conscious with a normal general condition. A corn-like ulcer was seen on the mucous membrane of oral vestibule. There wasn't other abnormal sign.

Diagnosis: Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis.

Differentiation: It's caused by heat evil in spleen and heart, which fled upward along spleen and heart channel, and then burnt the mucous membrane of the mouth.

Therapeutic Principle: Clearing away heat from heart and spleen, nourishing Yin and removing pathogenic fire to arrest ulcer.

Treatment: I told her to take 2 handfuls of mung bean, soak them in cool water for 20 minutes, and boil them with slow fire. When the water was boiling, it's most important to keep boiling only for 3 or 4 minutes. At the same time, she should break an egg, pour the albumen and youk into a bowl and mix them together, add into the boiling water to make the soup of mung bean and egg flower. After cooling the soup, she should drink it and eat the half-cooked mung bean.

Effect Observation: After 2 times of the above treatment, the pain disappeared, and the ulcer was cured too. Then it's ending.

Case 2

Name: Yang.

Sex : Male.

Age: 28 years.

Occupation: An accountant.

Chief Complaint: Pain of mouth and tongue for 1 month.

History of Present Illness: One month ago, the patient got a pain in the inside of mouth and the frenulum of his tongue without obvious cause. He once went to hospitals in Nanjing, the illness was diagnosed as "Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis" and he was treated by oral taking "VitC, VitBco, the pill of Calculus Bovis for Detoxification, the powder for astringing ulcer and promoting tissue regeneration." After 1 month of the above treatment, there was no curative effect on him. The pain was so severe that he felt uneasy whether sitting or standing. On June 10,1997 he met with me and asked me for treatment.

Physical Examination: Two pieces of ulcer was seen on the mucous membrane of oral vestibule and the frenulum of the tongue. The both sizes of them were 0.5cme. There wasn't other abnormal sign.
