Dingxiang Flos Caryophylli
The source is from the flower bud of Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb., which is called Gongdingxiang (Flos Caryophylli), family Myrtaceae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in Tanzania, Malaysia, and Indonesia, etc. and also cultivated in Guangdong Province of China. It is collected usually in the period of September and March of the next year when the bud changes from the green to the red, dried in the sun and the crude form is used.
Medicinal Properties Pungent in flavor, warm in nature and attributive to the spleen, stomach and kidney meridians.
Actions Warm the middle energizer and lower the adverse rising qi, warm the kidney to strengthen yang.
Application
1. It is used for stomach-cold syndrome with vomiting, hiccup, poor appetite and loose stool, and is an essential medicine to treat stomach-cold syndrome with vomiting and hiccup. For hiccup due to deficiency and cold, it is usually used in combination with Renshen (Radix Ginseng ), Shengjiang ( Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), such as Dingxiang Shidi Tang (Decoction); for stomach-cold type with vomiting, used together with Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae); for deficiency and cold of the spleen and stomach with vomiting and diarrhea, used together with Sharen ( Fructus Amomi ) and Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae ) .
2. For insufficiency of kidney-yang resulting in impotence, premature ejaculation and soreness of back, it is used together with Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Praeparata), Rougui ( Cortex Cinnamomi ), and Bajitian (Radix Morindae Officinalis ) , etc..
Usage and Dosage 2 - 5 g is used in decoction for oral use.
Notes It is incompatible with Rougui ( Cortex Cinnamomi ) .
Explanation Mudingxiang (Flos Caryophylli) is the mature fruit of Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb., also called Jishexiang ( Flos Caryophylli). Its nature, taste and action are same as those of Gongdingxiang (Flos Caryophylli), yet it has less powerful effect.
