Pipaye Folium Eriobotryae
The source is from the leaf of Eriobotrya japonica (Thunb.) Lindl., family Rosaceae. The plant is cultivated in most areas of China. The leaf can be collected all year around, dried in the sun, the hair being brushed, and then cut into fine pieces. The crude one or the one roasted with honey is used.
Medicinal Properties Bitter in flavor, slightly cold in nature and attributive to the lung and stomach meridians.
Actions Clear away lung-heat, resolve phlegm, relieve cough, lower the adverse-rising qi and arrest vomiting.
Application
1. It is indicated for cough. For cough due to lung-heat, it is usually combined with Sangye (Folium Mori), Qianhu (Radix Peucedani), etc.; for cough and dyspnea due to dryness-heat, it is combined with Sangbaipi ( Cortex Mori Radicis ) , Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae), and Shashen (Radix Glehniae), etc.; for chronic cough due to deficiency of the lung, combined with Ejiao ( Cotta Corii Asini ), Baihe ( Bulbus Lilii ) and others that nourish yin and moisten the lung.
2. For vomiting and nausea caused by stomach-heat, it is usually combined with Jupi (Pericarpium Citri Tangerinae ), Zhuru (Caulis Bambusae in Taeniam , etc..
Usage and Dosage 5- 10 g is used in decoction for oral use. The roasted one is suitable for arresting cough and the raw for arresting vomiting.
