Hehuanpi Cortex Albiziae
The source is from the bark of Albizzia julibrissin Durazz, family Leguminosae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in the provinces of the reaches of the Yangtze River, cut from the tree, dried in the sun and then cut into segments for being used.
Medicinal Properties Sweet in flavor, mild in nature, and attributive to the heart and liver meridians.
Actions Tranquilize the mind and disperse the depressed qi, activate blood circulation and relieve swelling.
Application
1. It is used for emotional injury manifested as mental depression, deficient vexation, insomnia and amnesia. It can be used alone or combined with Baiziren ( Semen Biotae), Longchi (Dens Draconis), etc..
2. It is used for trauma and swelling. In the treatment of fracture, it is usually combined with Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis ), Chuanxiong ( Rhizoma Chuanxiong) and Xuduan (Radix Dipsaci); in the treatment of carbuncle and ulcers, it is usually combined with Pugongying (Herba Taraxaci) and Yejuhua (Flos Chrysanthemi Indici ) .
Usage and Dosage 10 - 15 g is used in decoction for oral use.
Notes The flower or bud of Albizia julibrissin Durazz. is used as medicinal herb, which is named Hehuanhua (Flos Albiziae). It has similar medicinal properties and actions to those of Hehuanpi ( Cortex Albiziae) but is especially effective in tranquilizing the mind and dispersing the depressed qi, and usually used for vexation, insomnia, mental depression, amnesia and frequent dreams.
