Huangjing Rhizoma Polygonati
The source is from the rhizome of Polygonatum sibiricum Red., P. cyrtonema Hua or the other species of the same genus, Family Liliaceae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in the areas of Hebei, Inner Mongolia, and Shaanxi, etc.. Duohuahuangjing in the areas of Guizhou, Hunan, and Yunnan, etc.. Zhenhuangjing in the areas of Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi. The rhizome is dug and collected in both spring and autumn, cleaned, scalded in boiling water or steamed thoroughly, and then dried in the sun. It is cut into thick slices and used crudely or prepared with wine for medication.
Medicinal Properties Sweet in flavor, mild in nature and attributive to the lung, spleen and kidney meridians.
Actions Moisten the lung and nourish the kidney, invigorate the kidney and benefit qi.
Application
1. For dry cough with less sputum due to yin-deficiency and lung-dryness, it can be used alone and boiled into medicinal extract for oral use, or combined with Shashen ( Radix Adenophorae ), Chuanbeimu ( Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae ) , and Zhimu ( Rhizoma Anemarrhenae ) , etc..
2. It can benefit spleen-qi as well as nourish spleen-yin, and used for deficiency of the spleen and stomach. For deficiency of spleen-qi and stomach-qi manifested as fatigue, poor appetite and feeble pulse, it can be combined with Dangshen (Radix Codonopsis), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), etc. ; for deficiency of spleen-yin and stomach-yin causing dry mouth and poor appetite, red and uncoated tongue, can be combined with Shihu (Herba Dendrobii ), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis), and Shanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae), etc..
3. For deficiency of the kidney and insufficiency of essence manifested as dizziness, weakness of the waist and knees and premature whitening of hair, it is usually combined with Gouqizi (Fructus Lgcii) and others, such as Erjing Wan (Bolus).
In addition, it can also be used to treat diabetes, it is usually combined with Maimendong ( Radix Ophiopogonis), Tianhuafen (Radix Trichosanthis), and Huangqi (Radix, Astragali ) , etc..
Usage and Dosage 10 -15 g is used in decoction for oral use.
