3 The commonly-used dietary prescriptions for life cultivation

2.3.3.1 Prescriptions for supplementing healthy, qi

These prescriptions have tonic, roborant, anti-ageing and life-prolonging actions. They are applicable to patients with weak constitution and deficiency of healthy qi due to prolonged diseases.

2.3.3.1.1 Prescriptions for supplementing qi

Paste of Huangqi (Radix Astragali seu Hedysari ): 12 g of Shenghuangqi (fresh Radix Astragali seu Hedysari), 12 g of Shengshigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), 12 g of Xianmaogen (fresh Radix Curculiginis), 6 g of the fine powder of Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae ), 10 g of the powder of Huaishanyao ( Rhizoma Dioscoreae ) and 30 g of honey. At first, decoct Huangqi (Radix Astragali seu Hedysari), Shigao ( Gypsum Fibrosum) and Xianmaogen (fresh Radix Curculiginis) until the decoction boils for more than 10 times. Then, remove the dregs to leave two cups of the clear decoction. At this time, add Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae ) and Huaishanyao ( Rhizoma Dioscoreae) powder to the decoction and stir the decoction constantly to prevent the sedimentation of the medicinal powder. Boil the decoction for one more time and the paste forms. Next, pour the honey into the decoction. The whole process comes to an end when the decoction boils. Take all the paste in 3 divided times within a day.

Gruel for Strengthening healthy Qi. 30 to 60 g of prepared Huangqi (Radix Astragali seu Hedysari ) , 3 to 5 g of Renshen (Radix Ginseng) or 15 to 30 g of Dangshen (Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae ), a small amount of white sugar and 100 g of Jingmi (Semen Oryzae Sativae). At first, cut Huangqi (Radix Astragali seu Hedysari ) and Renshen ( Radix Ginseng ) or Dangshen ( Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae) into slices and soak them in cold water for half an hour. Then, decoct the ingredients to get the decoction. Use the decoction to cook gruel with Jingmi (Semen Oryzae Sativae) in two divided times in the morning and evening for ingestion.

Gruel of Renshen (Radix Ginseng) and Lianrou (Semen Nelumbinis ): 10 g of Renshen ( Radix Ginseng), 10 g of Lianzi ( Semen Nelumbinis) and 30 g of Bingtang (Saccharum). The common method is used to cook gruel for ingestion.

2.3.3.1.2 Prescriptions for tonifying blood

Hen Stewed with Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis): 15 g of Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), 15 g of Dangshen (Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae ), one hen (roughly 1,500 g), proper amount of green onion, fresh ginger, cooking wine and salt respectively. After butchering the hen, remove the feather and internal organs. Then, wash the hen clean. Next, put Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis ) and Dangshen (Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae) into the abdomen. At this time, add green onion, ginger, cooking wine and a proper amount of clear water. At first, boil the water with strong fire. Afterwards, change the fire into slow fire to decoct until the meat is thoroughly cooked. Eat the meat and drink the soup.

Soup of Chinese dates (Fructus Ziziphi Jujubae) and Black Edible Fungus. Five Chinese dates (Fructus Ziziphi Jujubae) and 15 g of black edible fungus. Stew the two thoroughly to be eaten.

Gruel of Gouqi (Fructus Lycii) 100 g of fresh Gouqizi (Fructus Lycii) and 60 g of Jingmi ( Semen Oryzae Sativae). The two are used to cook gruel. Drink the gruel with salty fermented soybeans as the assistant food.

2.3.3.1.3 Prescriptions for supplementing qi and tonifying blood

Paste of Guiyuan Shenmi (Paste of Arillus Longan, Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae and Milk): 250 g of Dangshen (Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae ), 120 g of Beishashen (Radix Glehniae) and 120 g of Guiyuanrou (Arillus Longan). At first, soak the above ingredients in a proper amount of water until they thoroughly ferment. Decoct the drugs for 30 minutes after the water boils. Decoct the ingredients in 3 different times. Then, mix the decoctions got in the 3 times. Next, decoct the mixed decoction to be condensed with slow fire until the paste forms. At this time, add double amount of honey. Afterwards, decoct them until boiling appears again. Finally, stop decocting and wait until the paste is cold. Store the paste in a bottle for later use. Dissolve a spoonful of the paste in boiling water to be taken at a draught each time, three times a day.

Gruel of Longyanrou (Arillus Longan ): 15 g of Longyanrou (Arillus Longan), 10 g of Fuling (Poria), 3 to 5 Chinese dates and 100 g of Jingmi ( Semen Oryzae Sativae). All the ingredients are used to cook gruel. Add a bit white sugar to the gruel to be eaten.

2.3.3.1.4 Prescriptions for nourishing yin

Wine of Gouqizi ( Fructus Lycii ) : 200 g of Gouqizi (Fructus Lycii) and 600 ml of white spirit. First, wash Gouqizi (Fructus Lycii) clean in clear water. Then, cut the ingredient into small pieces to be kept in a bottle. Afterwards, add about 400 ml of white spirit into the bottle. Next, keep the mouth of the bottle airtight. Vibrate and shake the bottle once every day. The wine can be drunken after a week's soakage. Drink 10 to 20 ml before supper or bed time every day. The wine in the bottle may be added continuously (altogether about 200 ml). Gouqizi (Fructus Lycii) may be mixed with sugar for eating.

Pork Liver Stewed with Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae): 15 g of Xuanshen ( Radix Scrophulariae ), 500 g of pork liver, a proper amount of rapeseed oil, ginger, green onion, soy sauce, millet wine and bean powder respectively. At first, wash the pork liver clean, and place it and Xuanshen ( Radix Scrophulariae) together in a pot. Then, add a proper amount of water to the pot and cook the ingredients for an hour. Next, take out the pork liver and cut it into slices for later use. In addition, parch the green onion and ginger with a bit of rapeseed oil and put them into the slices of the pig liver. Afterwards, put the soy sauce, white sugar and a small amount of cooking wine into the above decoction and cook the decoction with these ingredients again. After that, put some bean powder into the decoction to make the decoction transparent. Finally, pour the slices of pork liver into the juice and stir the juice evenly. Now, it is ready for use.

Soft-Shelled Turtle Steamed with Ermu (Bulbus Fritillariae and Rhizoma Anemarrhenae ). One soft-shelled turtle (approximately 500 g in weight), 5 g of Beimu ( Bulbus Fritillariae ), Zhimu ( Rhizoma Anemarrhenae), Qianhu ( Radix Peucedani ), Chaihu ( Radix Bupleuri) and Xingren ( Semen Armeniace Amarum ) respectively, a proper amount of millet wine and a bit of salt. At first, butcher the soft-shelled turtle and remove the head and internal organs. Then, wash the turtle clean to be cut into cubes. Next, add Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae), Zhimu ( Rhizoma Anemarrhenae ), Qianhu (Radix Peucedani), Chaihu ( Radix Bupleuri) and Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum) as welt as a proper amount of millet wine and a bit of salt. Add water to inundate the meat cubes. Finally, all the ingredients are steamed in a steamer for an hour. Eat the meat while it is still warm.

Gruel of Baihe (Bulbus Lilii): 30 g of the powder of dried Baihe (Bulbus Lilii ) (doubled in case of fresh one), 100 g of Jingmi ( Semen Oryzae Sativae) and a proper quantity of Bingtang (Saccharum). All the ingredients are used to cook gruel. Eat it in the morning and in the evening respectively.
