5 Posthemorrhagic syndromes
The rehabilitation on the basis of syndrome differentiation is needed due to dysfunctions of viscera and tissues and complicated symptoms after various types of hemorrhage like hemoptysis, haematemesis, hematuria, hematochezia, epistaxis, gingival hemorrhage, hematohidrosis, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis.
Syndrome differentiation and treatment
Deficiency of yin and body fluids
It manifests hectic fever, flushing of zygomatic region, night sweat, dry mouth and throat, dizziness, tinnitus, lumbar soreness, flaccidity of knees, restlessness due to asthenia, inadequat sleep, constipation, dry skin, red tongue with a litte fur, thready and rapid pulse. It is advisable to nourish yin and body fluids. In the case of pulmonary yin deficiency and concurrent dry cough and scanty sputum, use the modified Baihe Gujin Decoction (Lily Decoction for Strengthening the Lung); in the case of thirst with inclination to drink due to pulmonary heat and yin deficiency, use the modified Yunfi Decoction (Gypsum Decoction); in the case of soreness and flaccidity of waist and knees due to hepatorenal yin deficiency, use the modified Liuwei Dihuang Bolus (Bolus of Six Drugs Including Rehmannia) in combination with Pulsation-Restoring Decoction.
Deficiency of qi and blood
It manifests pale or sallow complexion, light-headedness, palpitation, short breath, lassitude, hypodynamia, poor appetite, numbness of hands and feet, pale lips and tongue, thready and weak pulse. It is advisable to supplement qi and nourish blood. In the case of deficiency of qi and blood, use the modified Maidong Yangrong Decoction; in the case of cardiosplenic asthenia, use the modified Guipi Decoction (Decoction for Invigorating the Spleen and Nourishing the Heart); in the case of consumptive diseases and sallow complexion, use the modified Guiqi Jianzhong Deoction (Decoction of Radix Angeticae Sinensis and Radix Astragali seu Hedysari for Strengthening the Middle Energizer).
Internal retention of blood stasis
It manifests general or local pain, or headache, or thoracic and hypochondriac stabbing pain with definite site, or low fever at dusk, restless nocturnal sleeping, blackish eyelids, cyanotic tongue with ecchymoses, thready and unsmooth pulse. It is advisable to activate blood circulation to remove blood stasis and promote generation of new blood. The prescription used is the modified Xuefu Zhuyu Decoction (Decoction for Removing Blood Stasis in the Chest). It is also advisable to select Resuscitation-Inducing and Blood-Activating Decoction, Decoction for Dissipating Blood Stasis Under Diaphragm, Decoction for Removing Blood Stagnation in the Lower Abdomen and Decoction for Relieving Pantalgia Due to Blood Stagnation according to the different sites of blood stagnation. In the case of concurrent qi deficiency or blood deficiency, use the modified Buyang Huanwu Decoction (Decoction of Invigorating Yang for Recuperation) or Taohong Siwu Decoction respectively.
