Seminal emission

[Introduction]

Seminal emission refers to discharge of semen with-out sexual activity. One or twice seminal emission in a month without evident discomfort in healthy man is regar-ded as physiological phenomenon. However, several times a week or in a night, accompanied by spiritual lassitude, dizziness and tinnitus, is morbid. Seminal emission in dream is called nocturnal emission, while seminal emis-sion in conscious state is called spermatorrhea. Nocturnal emission is usually caused by over-anxiety, indulgence in sexual life, disharmony between the heart and kidney as well as deficiency of water and exuberance of fire; or by partiality to greasy and pungent foods and accumulation of dampness into heat that disturbs semen. Prolonged dura-tion may exhaust kidney qi and weakens storage of semen, leading to spermatorrhea.

[Syndrome differentiation]

1. Disharmony between the heart and kidney

Dreaminess, priapism, susceptibility to erection, dysphoria and insomnia, dizziness, aching loins and spirit-ual lassitude, red tongue, thin and rapid pulse.

2. Downward migration of damp-heat

Frequent seminal emission, lassitude and anorexia, dampness or pruritus of pudendum, yellow and brown u-rine, unsmooth urination or burning sensation in urina-tion, red tongue tip and margins, yellow and greasy fur, slippery or rapid pulse.

3. Asthenia of kidney yang

Seminal emission without dream, even spermatorrhea with the desire of sex, dizziness and tinnitus, bright-white complexion, aching and weakness of loins and knees, aversion to cold and cold limbs, or accompanied by impotence, spontaneous sweating and shortness of breath, light-colored tongue with white fur, thin and weak pulse.
