[Introduction]
Infantile enuresis refers to involuntary and recurrent urination during sleep among infants over three years old. Enuresis may occur once in several days in mild cases and every night in serious cases, accompanied by lassitude and emaciation. According to TCM, infantile enuresis is caused by insufficiency of kidney qi which fails to consoli-date the bladder; or by asthenia of lung and spleen qi that fails to govern the lower energizer; or by stagnation of heat in the liver meridian and disorder of the bladder in transforming qi. This syndrome mainly involves the kid-ney and bladder.
[Syndrome differentiation]
1. Insufficiency of kidney yang
The symptoms are enuresis during sleep even several times a night, clear and profuse urine, dispiritedness and lassitude, whitish complexion and cold limbs, aching and weakness of the loins and knees, hypomnesis or poor mentality, light-colored tongue and thin pulse.
2. Asthenia of spleen and lung qi
The symptoms are enuresis during sleep, aggravation after fatigue, profuse and frequent urination, frequent spontaneous sweating, poor appetite, shortness of breath and no desire to speak, weakness of limbs, loose stool, light-colored tongue and thin pulse.
[Treatment]
1. Body acupuncture
Prescription: Guanyuan (CV 4), Zhongji (CV 3), Sanyinjiao (SP 6) and Pangguangshu (BL 28).
Modification: For insufficiency of kidney yang, Shen-shu (BL 23) and Mingmen (GV 4) are added; for asthenia of spleen and lung qi, Pishu (BL 20), Feishu (BL 13),
Qihai (CV 6) and Zusanli (ST 36) are added.
Performance. The acupoints are needled with fill-form needles and reinforcing technique or warmed needle or moxibustion with moxa-roll. Guanyuan (CV 4 ) and Zhongji (CV 3) are needled, after urination, obliquely downward with rotation of the needle for reinforcing pur-pose; Sanyinjiao (SP 6) is needled obliquely upward to direct the needling sensation to transmit upwards.
2. Scalp acupuncture
Prescription: Zone of pedal movement and sensation and reproductive zone.
