3. 5. 1 Acupoints on the head, face and neck

3. 5. 1.1 Acupoints on the head
The subcutaneous tissue of the head is thin and blood vessels are rich, so the acupoints on the area covered with hair (except the neck) are usually needled horizontally 0.5-0.8 cun. The needles can be gently and slightly twirled and rotated. After the withdrawal of the needles, the punctured acupoints are pressed to avoid bleeding.
Baihui (GV 20)--It is needled horizontally forward or backward, or is needled to the left or to the right horizontally according to the pathological conditions.
Xinhui (GV 22)--It should not be needled when the fontanel of infant is not closed.
3. 5. 1.2 Acupoints on the face
Acupoints on the cheek are usually needled perpen-dicularly or obliquely or horizontally 0.3 - 0.8 cun.
Yintang (EX-HN 3)--It is needled horizontally down-wards 0.3 - 0.5 cun when the skin is pinched. It should not be needled deeply downwards to the bilateral sides lest the eye ball be impaired.
Sibai (ST 2)--It is needled 0.2 - 0.3 cun perpendic-ularly or 0.3 - 0.5 cun obliquely downwards. It should not be needled deep lest the blood vessels and nerves be pricked because it is in the infraorbital foramen. After the withdrawal of the needle, the punctured acupeint is pressed to avoid bleeding.
Yingxiang (LI 20 )--It is needled obliquely and medially upwards 0.3 - 0.5 cun.
Shuigou ( GV 26 ), Suliao ( GV 25 )--They are generally needled obliquely upwards.
Dicang (ST 4 )--It is often needled 0.5- 1 cun horizontally towards Jiache (ST 6).
Taiyang ( EX-HN 4 )--It is needled 0.3 - 0.5 cun perpendicularly or obliquely backwards, or is pricked for bloodletting.
Jiache (ST 6)--It is needled 0.3 - 0.5 cun perpen-dicularly or 0.5- 1 cun horizontally towards Dicang (ST 4).
Acupoints on the ocular area:
Jingming (BE 1)--There are rich blood vessels and loose tissues in the subcutaneous region. So it is easy to cause bleeding. If it is needled deep, optic nerve may be impaired. In the treatment, the patient is asked to close the eyes and the eyeball is pushed gently to the lateral side. It is needled slowly and perpendicularly 0.3-0.7 cun along the orbital wall. The needle should not be lifted and thrusted or twirled and rotated so as to avoid pricking blood vessels. The needle is withdrawn gently and slowly. Then the punctured point is pressed for 2 ¨C 3 minutes with sterilized dry cotton balls in order to prevent bleeding.
Chengqi (ST 1 )--Before needling, the eyeball is pushed upwards for fixation. The other requirements are the same as those for Jingming (BL 1).
Cuanzhu (BL 2)--It is needled 0. 3 - 0. 5 cun horizontally downwards for the treatment of ocular disea-ses; it is needled horizontally and externally to Yuyao (EX-HN 4) for the treatment of facial paralysis.
Sizhukong (TE 23), Tongziliao (GB 1)--They are u-sually needled horizontally backward.
Aeupoints on the ear area:
Ermen (TE 21), Tinggong (SI 19), Tinghui (GB 2)--They are needled 0.5 - 1 cun perpendicularly when the mouth is open. When the needles are retained, the mouth is slowly closed.
Yifeng (TE 17 )--It is needled perpendicularly 0.8 - 1 cun, or is punctured 0.5 - 1 cun from the posterior and lateral to the medial and downward. The deeper site is the place where the facial nerve perforates the stylo-mastoid foramen. So the needle should not be inserted too deep lest the facial nerve be impaired. The needling ma-nipulations should not be too forceful, especially in the treatment of facial paralysis at the primary stage.
3. 5. 1.3 Acupoints on the nape
The acupoints on the nape are generally needled 0.5 - 1 cun obliquely downward. The angle and depth of needle insertion should be carefully controlled so as to prevent accidents.
Yamen (GV 15) and Fengfu (GV 16)¡ªDeep insertion is inadvisable. It should not be inserted over 1 cun because there are important structures in the deep layer. The needle tip should be inserted slowly toward the mandible. But it should not be inserted upwards to avoid insertion of the needle into the great occipital foramen or impairment of the medullary bulb.
Fengchi (GB 20)--It is needled slowly with the nee-dle tip pointing toward the tip of the nose. It should not be inserted over 1 cun lest the medullary bulb be impaired.
Tianzhu (BL 10)--It is needled perpendicularly or obliquely 0.5-0.8 cun. But it cannot be inserted deep obliquely upward lest the medullary bulb be impaired.
3. 5. 1.4 Acupoints on the neck
These acupoints should be inserted slowly 0.3-0.8 cun, avoiding the carotid artery.
Renying (ST 9)--It is needled slowly and perpendic-ularly 0.2-0.5 cun in depth, avoiding the common carotid artery. Cares should be taken to avoid deep inser-tion, or lateral insertion, or strong manipulations.
Lianquan (CV 23 )--It is needled obliquely 0.3-0.5 cun towards the root of the tongue.
