Insomnia and Sleep Disturbances
Most people know the symptoms of insomnia:

Difficulty falling asleep
Waking up frequently during the night
Difficulty getting back to sleep
Waking up feeling tired
According to the a National Sleep Foundation poll, and a Mayo Clinic report, almost half of American adults suffer from insomnia or sleep disturbances from time to time. This percentage is even higher in the older population.
Mayo Clinic researchers have now determined that there is a link between insomnia and gastrointestinal disorders including heartburn, irritable bowel syndrome and indigestion.

The causes of insomnia include:

Stress and anxiety
Depression
Chronic disorders, including sleep disorders
Medications
Caffeine, Nicotine and Alcohol
Lack of exercise
Another cause I have listed in my Basics Of Insomnia article is poor eating habits.

Faulty eating habits cause --- you guessed it, heartburn, indigestion and other gastrointestinal complaints.

Avoid greasy or too sweet foods near bedtime. Also avoid eating a heavy meal shortly before going to bed.

If you suffer from disorders including irritable bowel syndrome or other chronic intestinal problems, strive to keep them under control. Heartburn can also be treated using lifestyle changes and medication. About's Heartburn Guide, Sharon Gillson has some offers some excellent tips for preventing attacks.

Heavy eating, especially during the holiday season, can cause indigestion or heartburn. Even during seasons of celebration, try to avoid eating large meals, or indulging in an overabundance of rich and sweet food. Heartburn and indigestion can spoil a great evening with family. It can also keep you awake. Getting up in the morning tired, headachy and irritable can put the damper on the day.
