The Functions of the Lung(B)

TCM

The Lungs Regulate The Passage of Water Through the Body

As discussed above, the Lungs have a role to play in ensuring that Body Fluids are dispersed healthily throughout the body. Impaired Lung function can lead to retention of urine.

The Lungs Control the Skin and The Hair

As has been pointed out, the Lungs have a vital role to play in ensuring that Qi and fluids flow smoothly and effectively in the outermost parts of the body. Thus, it is seen in Chinese medicine that the Lungs have a powerful influence over the skin and the sweat glands. If Lung function is impaired then this may lead to rough and dry skin. In Chinese medicine, skin conditions are always seen as being evidence of a Lung disharmony. It is interesting to note that Chinese medicine provides a strong basis for the observed connection between skin allergies and Lung allergies, for example asthma and eczema.

In terms of hair, the Lungs control the condition of general body hair, while the hair on our head is seen as being related to Kidney function. The health of general body hair is closely related to the condition of the skin.

The Lung Open Into the Nose

The nose is seen as the opening of the Lungs, and the condition of the Lungs will therefore determine factors such as how clear the nose is and how acute our sense of smell is. Clearly, when Lung function is impaired then so are these factors.

The Lung Bring US A Sense of Connection to the World

The theory of Chinese medicine sees the Lungs as being responsible for the extent to which we make healthy and constructive connections with the world we live in. With healthy Lung function we are able to maintain structures in our dealing with others. Impaired Lung function can lead to a sense of alienation. In particular, the emotion associated with the Lungs is Grief. When we deal with loss and change in a healthy way, our sense and experience of Grief can be controlled and helpful. If the Lungs are impaired we may find it very difficult to cope with Grief and change.
