Lianqiao Fructus Forsythiae
The source is from the fruit of Forsythia Suspensa (Thunb.) Vahl., family Oleaceae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in Northeast China, North China and Northwest China and the reaches of Yangtze River. In autumn when the fruits are ripe at the early stage, Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae ) collected is known as Qingqiao, when the fruit is completely ripe, the one collected as Huangqiao and the seed as Lianqiaoxin. The crude is used.
Medicinal Properties Bitter in flavor, slightly cold in nature and attributive to the lung, heart and gall-bladder meridians.
Actions Clear away heat and relieve toxin, treat carbuncle, disperse lumps and stagnation, expel wind and heat.
Application
1. It is indicated for seasonal febrile diseases and exterior syndrome of exogenous wind-heat type. Its actions are similar to those of Jinyinhua (Flos Lonicerae), that is, it can also clear away heat and toxin, and is accompanied with expelling wind and heat as well, so it is usually used for heat syndrome due to exogenous attack. For the beginning of seasonal febrile diseases the pathogenic factor of which is in weifen and superficial syndrome of exogenious wind-heat type, it is combined with Jinyinhua (F los Lonicerae ), with which Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae) is added to the diaphoretic prescriptions with pungent and cool property, such as Yin Qiao San (Powder); since it is good at clearing away heart-fire, it can also be used for febrile disease involving the pericardium with restless fever, coma or delirium. Lianqiaoxin is usually used together with Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis ), Zhuyexin ( Folium Phyllostachydis Henonis ), Lianzixin (Plumula Nelumbinis). It is also used for oral ulcer due to uprising of cardiac fire.
2. Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae ) is a common medicine that treats surgical pyocutaneous diseases, can not only clear away heat and relieve toxin but also disperse stagnation. It is used for carbuncle of heat type and pyocutaneous disease or scrofula, etc. whether the carbuncle is ripe or not. It is usually used together with Tianhuafen (Radix Trichosanthis), Zihuadiding (Herba Violae), and Jinyinhua ( Flos Lonicerae ), etc.. For scrofula and subcutaneous nodes, it can be combined with Xiakucao ( Spica Prunellae), Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Thunbergii ) , and Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae ) , etc..
In addition, it is also used for dysuria or dribbling urination with pain, combined with Mutong ( Caulis Akebiae), Baimaogen (Rhizoma Imperatae), etc..
Usage and Dosage 6 -15 g is used in decotion for oral use.
Notes It is not suitable for deficiency and cold of the spleen and stomach and qi deficiency with thin pus.
