Baitouweng Radix Pulsatillae
The source is from the root of Pulsatilla chinensis (Bunge) kegel, family Ranunculaceae. The medicinal material is produced in the areas of Northeast China, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and North China. It is dug and collected in spring and autumn, its leaves, flower stems and fibrous roots being removed and its root stock enlarged and covered with white hairs being kept, and dried in the sun. The crude can be used.
Medicinal Properties Bitter in flavor, cold in nature, and attributive to the large intestine meridian.
Actions Clear away heat and eliminate toxin, cool the blood and treat dysentery.
Application
1. It is indicated for dysentery of heat type and an essential medicine to treat dysentery and especially suit-able for dysentery of serious heat with the fresh blood. It can be used alone or combined with Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis ) , Huangbai ( Cortex Phellodendri ), and Qinpi ( Cortex Fraxini), etc., such as Baitouweng Tang (Decoction). It is also effective to treat bacillary and amebic dysentery.
2. For scrofula, carbuncle and scaby head, it can be used internally or externally. For damp-heat in the lower part with pudendal itching, and leukorrhea, it can be combined with Kushen (Radix Sophorae Ftavescentis ), which are decocted for externally washing.
Usage and Dosage 9 -15 g is used in decoction for oral use. Just right amount is used externally.
Notes Contraindicated for dysentery due to deficiency and cold.
