Chinese herb Gegen Radix Puerariae

Gegen

The source is from the roots of Pueraria lobata (Willd.) ohwi, family Leguminosae. The producing areas are in all parts of China. The medicinal material is collected in spring and autumn, cut into pieces, dried in the sun and the raw or the stewed form is used for medication.
Medicinal Properties Sweet and pungent in flavor, cool in nature and attributive to the spleen and stomach meridians.
Actions Expel pathogenic factors in the muscles to abate heat, let out the skin eruptions, promote the production of body fluid to relieve thirst and uplift yang to relieve diarrhea.
Application
1. It is used for exterior syndrome due to exogenous attack. For wind-heat syndrome due to exogenous attack manifested as aversion to cold and fever, headache and dryness of nose, it is often used together with Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri ) , Huangqin ( Radix Scutellariae ) and Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae ), such as Chai Ge Jieji Tang (Decoction). It is also a common medicine for treating stiffness and pain of the nape and back and mostly used for superficial syndrome of wind-cold type manifested as stiffness and pain of the nape and back, and used together with Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae), Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi), and others that expel cold from the exterior, such as Gegen Tang (Decoction),
2. It is used for measles at the early stage with unsmooth eruption. It is usually used together with Shengma ( Rhizoma Cimicifugae ), Jingjie ( Herba Schizonepetae), and Niubangzi (Fructus Arctii), etc..
3. Used for febrile disease with excessive thirst and internal heat with diabetes, it is often combined with Lugen (Rhizoma Phragmitis), Tianhuafen ( Radix Trichosanthis), and Maimendong ( Radix Ophiopogonis ), etc..
4. It is used for dysentery. For dysentery of damp-heat type, it is often combined with Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae ) , Huanglian ( Rhizoma Coptidis ), etc., such as Gegen Huangqin Huanglian Tang (Decoction). For diarrhea due to spleen-deficiency, often used together with Renshen ( Radix Ginseng), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae ), and Fuling (Poria), etc., such as Oiwei Baizhu San (Powder).
Usage and Dosage 10 -15 g is used in decoction for oral use. The raw is suitable for reducing fever and promoting the production of the body fluids and the stewed form for uplifting yang and relieving diarrhea.
Explanation The research has shown that the pharmacological action of Gegen (Radix Puerariae) is to reduce blood pressure and dilate blood vessels, therefore it is indicated for high blood pressure with headache and stiffness of the nape, coronary heart disease, etc..
Gehua (Flos Puerariae) : The flower of the perennial deciduous liana consists of flower bud and is sweet in flavor and neutral in nature. It can relieve alcoholism and activate the spleen-qi and it is effective in treating over-drinking of alcohol.
