    Acupuncture treatment for Diabetes

    Description
    When insufficient insulin is produced and glucose accumulates in the blood.

    TCM Patterns
    Heat exhausts body fluids, injuring Yin, or Kidney Yang deficiency therefore unable to transform Qi.

    (a) Increased thirst indicates Upper Diabetes. (Lung)

    (b) Increased appetite indicates Middle Diabetes (Spleen)

    (c) Increased urination and/or lumbar pain indicates Lower Diabetes. (Kidney)

    Treatment Principles
    Generally, drain heat which has collected in the San Jiao.

    (a) Clear heat in the Lung, moisten dryness, produce body fluids and relieve thirst by needling points on the Lung channel with reducing and even methods.

    (b) Clear Heat in Stomach, reduce Fire, nourish Yin and produce body fluids by needling points on the Stomach and Spleen channels and Back-Shu points with the reducing and even methods.

    (c) Tonify Liver and Kidney Yin by reinforcing back-Shu points and points on the Liver and Kidney Channels.

    Commonly Used Points
    (a) BL13, BL15, BL43, LU5, LU9, LU10, REN23, ST36, KID3, Yishu (Extra, 1.5ˇ± lateral to T8)

    (b) ST36, ST44, SP6, PC6, REN12, BL20, BL21, KI3, M-BW-12 Weiguanxiashu

    (c) REN4, REN6, KID2, KID3, LIV2, BL18, BL23, SP6, GB25, Yishu

    Special Points/Treatment
    Ear points:

    For thirst use Endocrine, Lung & Thirst. For hunger use Endocrine & Stomach. For frequent urination use Endocrine, Kidney & Bladder.

    Generally:

    Pancreas, Endocrine, Kidney, Sanjiao, Root of Auricular Vagus Nerve, Ear Shenmen, Heart, Liver.

    Additional Treatment Info
    If possible treat as frequently as daily or every other day.

    Precautions
    Complications may be the clue to presence of the disease e.g. retinopathy, neuropathy, nephropathy and arteriosclerosis.

    Other Treatment Info
    Mixed patterns are common - treat according to predominant clinical manifestations. Where two excesses are present, treat both.
