"Massage Therapy for Fibromyalgia" helps to educate the viewer about fibromyalgia, a confusing health problem that had doctors puzzled for years, and for good reason.

Each person with fibromyalgia probably had different symptoms. Today, we know a lot more about this health problem and this DVD covers the definition, the current theories and what the authors know in the chapter called "About Fibromyalgia." In this chapter, we learn the official diagnosis contains two conditions that must be met: the first is widespread pain in the right and left side in at least two quadrants of the body; and second, of the 18 tender spots, 11 of them must be tender.

Even though each person's symptoms might be unique, pain is the common denominator. There are no medical tests to indicate you have it. But, you will view a list of symptoms associated with people with fibromyalgia. They also describe what they believe causes it. They believe the following are causes of it: sleep disorders, trauma, immune dysfunction and hormonal imbalance. We find out it can take years of diligent massage therapy effort. The massage therapists with a client who has fibromyalgia must comprehend all of this so they can help their client understand what to expect. Using massage therapy, you can expect relapses. It also might take up to three months before seeing progress and a person in pain seeking help needs to know this.

In the next important section, we view three different massages: a 20-minute massage for sleep, a 23-minute massage for pain and a 37-minute massage for headaches. (These massages are brief due to the work being shown done on only one leg and not the other, etc.) Each massage is given with clear directions, as well as the reasons why this particular type of massage work is so beneficial. After each massage there is a continuation of more information to benefit the person with fibromyalgia. You will find information on such topics as natural medicines, supplements and creams.

This nearly completes the DVD program except for the extras. These topics include: diet, exercise, acupuncture, chronic fatigue and fibro-fog. I was not impressed with the information contained in the extras. Most of it was basic information that could have been included in the chapter "About Fibromyalgia."

"Massage Therapy for Fibromyalgia" is a much-needed tool for people with fibromyalgia, as well as massage therapists. Understanding what these people are experiencing and the three different massages to help alleviate their pain is priceless. This DVD provides excellent massages to help our clients who have fibromyalgia, as well as describes what we know now and theories of what they know so far.
