Maqianzi Semen Strychni
The source is from the dried ripe seed of Strychnos nuxvomica L. or Strychnos pierriana A. W. Hill, family Loganiaceae. The medicinal material is mainly prouded in India, Vietnam, Thailand, and the Strychnos pierriana A. W. is mainly produced in Yunnan and Guangdong provinces of China. It is collected in summer and autumn, the pulp being removed and the seed being taken out and then dried in the sun. It is processed before being used.
Medicinal Properties Bitter in flavor, cold in nature, toxic and attributive to the liver and spleen meridians.
Actions Remove obstruction in the channels, relieve pain and subdue swelling.
Application
1. It can be used in combination with Baijiangcan (Bombyx Batrgticatus ) to treat carbuncle or fracture with stasis of the blood, swelling and pain, such as Qinglong Wan (Pill). For laryngalgia, it is used in combination with equal amount of Shandougen (Radix Sophorae Subprostratae ) and Qingmuxiang ( Radix Aristolochiae ), which is ground into powder and insufflated into the local area.
2. In treating Bi-syndrome with pain of wind and dampness type or spasm and numbness, it can be used in combination with Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae), Ruxiang ( Olibanum ), Moyao (Myrrhae ), etc..
Usage and Dosage For external use, proper amount is ground into powder, which is insufflated into the local area or applied to the local area with water. 0.3 -0.6 g is processed into pill or powder for oral use.
Notes It is toxic and therefore it should not be taken over a long time and the dosage should be strictly controlled. It is contraindicated in pregnant women. Over-dosage may lead to such symptoms as tremor of the limbs, infantile convulsion, dyspnea and even coma.
Shechuangzi Fructus Cnidii
The source is from the dried ripe fruit of Cnidium onnierii (L.) cusson, family Umbellifeme. The medicinal material is produced all over China, collected in summer and autumn when the fruit is ripe, the stems of the plant being cut down, dried in the sun, threshed to get the fruits and then sieved. The crude is used for medication.
Medicinal Properties Pungent and bitter in flavor, mild in nature, slightly toxic and attributive to the kidney meridian.
Actions Eliminate dampness and destroy parasites, warm the kidney and strengthen yang.
Application
1. It can be used for pudendum itching caused by dampness, eczema, exudative ulcer and tinea. In treating pudendum itching, eczema of scrotum, it is alone decocted to wash the local area, or together with Mingfan (A1umen ) , Kushen ( Radix Sophorae Flavescentis ), and Huangbai (Cortex Phetlodendri). In treating tinea, it can be ground into powder and applied to the local area with oil.
2. For leukorrhea of cold-damp type, lumbago caused by damp-Bi-syndrome. In treating leukorrhea of cold-damp type, it can be used in combination with Shanzhuyu (Fruetus Corni), Cheqianzi (Semen Plantaginis), and Xiangfu (Rhizoma Cyperi), etc.. In treating lumbago caused by damp-Bi-syndrome, it is used in combination with Sangjisheng ( Ramulus Taxilli ), Duzhong ( Cortex Eucommiae ), and Qinjiao ( Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae ) , etc..
3. For deficiency of kidney-yang, deficiency-cold of the lower energizer manifested as impotence and sterility, it can be used together with Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae) and Tusizi (Semen Cuscutae ), which are ground together into powder and made into pill with honey for oral use.
Usage and Dosage For oral use, 3 -10 g is used in decoction, or in pill or powder. For external use, it is decocted to wash the local area, or ground into powder and applied to the local area. The amount should be proper.
Notes It is not suitable for those with hyperactivity of fire due to yin deficiency or those with dampness and heat in the lower energizer.
