As many parents know all too well, ear infections are the scourge of early childhood, causing apparent agony for children and many sleepless nights for families. Attempts to provide quick relief may be why ear infections have traditionally been overdiagnosed and overtreated. Doctors continue to write millions of antibiotic prescriptions for acute otitis media, as the condition is medically known, despite what the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality has called a woeful lack of evidence for their use. In many cases the drugs may do more harm than good, leading to side effects, antibiotic resistance and a cycle of hard-to-treat and recurring infections.

To address these concerns, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Family Physicians issued a joint statement in 2004 advising physicians when to treat with antibiotics and when to consider taking a wait-and-see approach, based on the child¡¯s age and symptoms. But many doctors don¡¯t follow the advice. According to one survey, 83 percent of doctors considered the wait-and-see approach a reasonable option, yet they used it in only about 15 percent of cases.
