Jixueteng Caulis Spatholobi
The source is from the vine of Spatholobus suberectus Dunn, family Legnminosaae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in Guangxi, cut in autumn, dried in the sun, moistened thoroughly and then cut into pieces. The crude form or paste steamed is used.
Medicinal Properties Bitter and slightly sweet in flavor, warm in nature and attributive to the liver meridian.
Actions Promote blood circulation and enrich the blood, regulate menstruation, relax tendons and activate the meridians.
Application
1. It is used for irregular menstruation, unsmooth menstruation, dysmenorrhea and amenorrhea due to blood deficiency no matter whether the symptoms are caused by stasis or deficiency of blood or blood deficiency concurrently having stasis.
2. For soreness, numbness and palsy of extremities and pain in the Bi-syndrome due to wind-damp, etc., it can be combined with according to syndromes.
Recently paste of Jixueteng ( Caulis Spatholobi) is used for leukocytopenia.
Usage and Dosage 10 - 15 g is used in decoction for oral use and large amount of 30 g may be used. Or it can be soaked in wine or decocted into paste.
Sanleng Rhizoma Sparganii
The source is from the tuber of Sparganium stoloniferum Buch. Ham., family Sparganiaceae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in the areas of Jiangsu, Henan, Shandong, Jiangxi and Anhui, dug and collected in winter and spring, peeled, dried in the sun, moistened thoroughly and then cut into pieces. The crude form or the one stir-baked with vinegar is used.
Medicinal Properties Bitter in flavor, mild in nature and attributive to the liver and spleen meridians.
Actions Remove blood stasis, activate circulation of qi and alleviate pain.
Application
1. It is used for stagnation of qi and stasis of blood manifested as amenorrhea, abdominal pain and mass. Since it can promote circulation of qi to alleviate pain as well as remove blood stasis, it can be used in combination with Ezhu (Rhizoma Zedoariae) every time to treat the above syndrome. For example, Sanleng Wan (Pill) is used for amenorrhea and abdominal pain due to blood stasis.
2. For stagnation of food with fullness and pain of epigastric abdomen, it is usually combined with Ezhu (Rhizoma Zedoariae ) , Qingpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride ) and Maiya (Fructus Hordi Germinatus ), etc. ;if the syndrome is accompanied by weakness of the spleen and stomach, Dangshen ( Radix Codonopsis ), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) and others that enrich qi and nourish the spleen should be combined with.
Usage and Dodge 3 - 10 g is used in decoction for oral use. That prepared with vinegar can strengthen the action of alleviating pain.
Notes Contraindicated in excessive menstruation and pregnant women.
Ezhu Rhizoma Zedoariae
The source is from axial rhizome of Curcuma Kwangsinensis S. G. Lee et C. F. Liang, C. aromatica Salisb. and C. zedoaria Rosc., family Zingiberaceae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in areas of Guangxi, Sichuan, Guangdong and Yunan, dug and collected in autumn and winter, steamed or boiled until to its center, and then dried and cut into pieces. The crude or the prepared with vinegar is used.
Medicinal Properties Pungent and bitter in flavor, warm in nature and attributive to the liver and spleen meridians.
Actions Remove blood stasis, activate qi and alleviate pain.
Application
1. It is used for amenorrhea and abdominal pain and mass caused by stagnation of qi and blood stasis. Its action is similar to that of Sanleng (Rhizoma Sparganii), but the action of removing blood stasis is weaker and the action of circulating qi to arrest pain is stronger than that of Sanleng (Rhizoma Sparganii ). For the former, combined with Sanleng (Rhizoma Sparganii), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), and Niuxi ( Radix Achyranthis Bidenatatae), etc. ; for the latter, it is combined etc. ;if the syndrome is accompanied by weakness of the spleen and stomach, Dangshen ( Radix Codonopsis ), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) and others that enrich qi and nourish the spleen should be combined with.
2. For stagnation of food and fullness and distention of epigastric abdomen due to irregular diet and failure of spleen's transportation and transformation, it is usually combined with Sanleng (Rhizoma Sparganii), Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae ), Zhishi ( Fructus Aurantii Immaturus), and Shanzha ( Fructus Crataegi), etc. ; for the above syndrome accompanied by weakness of spleenqi, yet combined with Dangshen (Radix Codonopsis ), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) and others that can enrich spleen-qi.

Shuizhi Hirudo
The source is from the whole body of Annelid whitmania pigra (whitman), Whitmania acranulae (whit-man), Hirudo nipponica whitman, etc., family Hirudinidae. The medicinal material is produced in all parts of China, caught in summer from May to June or in autumn, dried in the sun to avoid moth-eating. The powder or the one roasted with weak fire is used.
Medicinal Properties Salty and bitter in flavor, mild in nature, mildly toxic and attributive to the liver meridian.
Action Remove blood stasis.
Application
It is used for blood-stasis syndromes such as amenorrhea, abdominal mass and trauma. For amenorrhea and abdominal mass, it is usually combined with Taoren (SeDahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei ), Shuizhi (Hirudo), Ruxiang (Olibanum) and Moyao (Myrrha), etc., such as Huazheng Huisheng Dan (Pill).
Usage and Dodge 1 - 1.5 g is used in decoction for oral use. 0. 3 g of the powder is swallowed with water.
Notes Contraindicated in pregnant women.
