Prevention Breast Cancer

The generosity of people such as race-day volunteer Kaye Thomas helps to support leading genetic scientist Prof John Hopper,

whose research is funded by the National Breast Cancer Foundation ,Together, they are working towards a cure for breast cancer.

In a decade since the walk started, more than $3.2 million has been raised for the NBCF.

Foundation patron Sarah Murdoch said one in eight Australian women would be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

"The Mother's Day Classic is the largest charity fun run in Australia," Mrs Murdoch said.
"For everyone who takes part- whether that be participants or the many hundreds of volunteers ¨C it's a fun way to contribute

to life-saving research and at the same time to celebrate your mum."

Mrs Murdoch said since 1998, the Mother's Day Classic had funded 15 Australian researchers from 12 institutions.

"Not only have survival rates improved (approximately 22 per cent over the past decade) but so too has the quality of treatment for women with breast cancer.

"But we still have a long way to go. Events such as the Mother's Day Classic enable the NBCF to fund research into prevention disease, treatment and, our ultimate goal, a cure for breast cancer."

Now in very good health, Mrs Berry volunteers for the Cancer Council's peer support network - which is exactly what she gets from the Mother's Day Classic.
