Theory and Treatment of Infantile Hyperative Syndrome
The causes of the Infantile Hyperative Syndrome include congenital insufficiency, diet and trauma, etc. Viral infection or drug administration affecting the fetus in pregnancy as well as intrauterine suffocation of the fetus during delivery affects the normal development of the fetus; parental pychoneurosis causes weak physique of the infantile patient and imbalance of yin and yang; malnutrition, or imbalanced diet or excessive ingestion of uncooked and cold food impairing the spleen and stomach leads to deficiency of qi and blood, loss of nourishment of the heart and mind; excessive intake of fat and sweet food causes dampness, heat and phlegm, blocking functional activities of qi and disturbing the mind; birth injury and other traumas result in infantile stagnation of qi and blood, obstructive meridians as well as perturbation due to loss of nourishment of the heart and liver; after recovery from other primary diseases, deficiency of qi and blood, or disorder of qi and
blood in circulation still exists in the body and makes the heart and mind lose nourishment, giving rise to failure of the heart to store mind. All the above factors may give rise to infantile hyperactive syndrome.

The general therapeutic principles of infantile syndrome lie in regulating yin and yang.

Attention should be given to the two points in treatment: first, the treatment should concentrate on the kidney followed by simultaneous treatment of the heart and brain. On the basis of tonifying the kidney, the methods include clearing away heat from the heart and calming the liver, tonifying the spleen and resolving phlegm as well as benefiting intelligence and removing blood stasis for simultaneous treatment of principal and subordinate symptoms with the emphasis laid on principal symptoms. Secondly, regulate viscera, yin and yang. The treatment should focus on curing deficiency and purging the excess to achieve the balance of yin and yang as well as good health. Drugs of bitter and cold-nature or tranquilizers should not be overused only because of the hyperkinesia, impetuosity and irascibility of the infantile patients.
