Normal Pulse Manifestation In Tibetan Medicine
Normal pulse manifestation is called plain pulse, which can be further divided into three kinds, yin, yang and neutral. Yang pulse is rough and robust, pulsating slow and mild; yin pulse is reversed, it's fine and rather rapid; neutral pulse is long and smooth, soft and moderate (not rapid nor slow). Generally, a yang pulse is seen in man and a yin pulse in woman. However, this is not absolute, as a yin pulse may sometimes,be seen in a man, and a yang pulse in a woman. These are all normal pulse manifestations. It is important to know the pulse of the patient in normal times and see what variations occur after the onset of illness.

Theory and Seasonal Changes of Pulse Manifestation

Theory of pulse manifestation
The theory is mainly the yin-yang and the five-evolutionary phase, especially the latter, which refer to wood, fire, earth, metal and water. This theory claims that these five elements are mutually promoted, mutually restricted, mutually generated, and mutually subdued. There are mother-son (mutual generation, mutual restriction), and friend-enemy (mutual overcoming and mutual subduing) relations, which can be expressed as the following diagram.

Tibetan medicine uses the relationship among these five elements to explain the relationship among the viscera and the pulse manifestation. For instance, Tibetan medicine holds that the liver and gallbladder belong to wood, while the heart and small intestine belong to fire; spleen and stomach belong to earth; the lung and large intestine belong to metal; and the kidney and bladder belong to water. During diagnosis, this relationship is used to predict the prognosis. Spring, for instance, belongs to wood, and to liver, hence, a liver pulse should appear in spring, or it should be fine and tense. According to the five-evolutionary phase theory, water is the mother of wood, and water is also connected with the kidney. As the kidney pulse is soft and retarded, it is a normal pulse. Earth is the friend of wood, which is connected to the spleen and stomach. When the spleen pulse is strong and full, or the function of spleen and stomach is strong, then the liver-wood can be moistened and nourished by water. Normally, the function of liver-wood needs the support of spleen-earth (friend). These are all normal relationships. However, when an exuberant lung pulse appears in the spring, since the lung belongs to metal, which has a mutually restrictive relationship with spleen-liver. Hence, an exuberant pulse appearing in the spring is not good.
