Prescription

It refers to increasing or decreasing the dosage of a drug in an established prescription without any change in its ingredients so as to change its potency or even its compatibility as well as its action and indication. For instance, Sini Tang and Tongmai Sini Tang are both composed of Fuzi ( Radix Aconiti Lateralis ), Ganjiang ( Rhizoma Zingiberis) and Zhigancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Praeparatae), acting respectively as the monarch, minister and adjuvant drugs. Because the former contains less of the first two ingredients than the latter, and functions to recuperate depleted yang and rescue patients from collapse, it is used to treat the syndrome due to excessive yin and deficient yang marked by cold limbs, aversion to cold, lying in curl, dyspeptic diarrhea, deep faint and thready pulse. In the latter, however, both of the first two ingredients are increased. So it functions to warm the interior torecuperate depleted yang and promote blood circulation. It is mainly applied to treating the syndrome due to excessive yin repelling yang marked by cold limbs, no aversion to cold, flushed cheeks, dyspeptic diarrhea and extremely faint or even depleting pulse. Take Xiao chengqi Tang and Houpo Sanwu Tang for another example, both are composed of Dahuang (Radixet Rhizoma Rhei), Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus) and Houpo (Cortex MagnoLIAEOfficinalis).

In the former prescription, Dahuang (Radixet Rhizoma Rhei) is in large dosage and used as the monarch drug, and Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus) as the minister drug. Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis) is in half the dosage of Dahuang (Radixet Rhizoma Rhei) and serves as the adjuvant drug. This recipe, with the function of purging away heat and relieving constipation, is indicated formild case with excess syndrome of the Yangming fu organs. In the latter, however, Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis) serves as the monarch drug with a larger dosage, Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus ) as the minister with the dose larger than that of the former prescription, and Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) as the adjuvant drug in half the dosage of Houpo ( CorteX Magnoliae Officinalis). The latter prescription functions to promote the flow of qi and relieve constipation and is mainly used to treat constipation due to stagnation of qi .
