There is an old Tibetan Medicine saying that, "undigested food may turn into poison." That is to say, those foods that are not digested normally may change into toxic materials detrimental to the body. Here, two factors should be considered. On die one hand, the dross that is not digestible may become lumps in the abdomen due to longstanding stagnation; on the other hand, the essence in the foods also become coagulated if it is not normally digested and becomes abdo lumps. Moreover, it may further change to edema, and be transformed into toxic materials distributed all over the body to cause various serious ailments such as carbuncle, abscess, jaundice, arthralgia, or even lead to splenopathy in protracted cases.
Manifestations include abdominal distension, alternate diarrhea and constipation general lassitude, heavy limbs, belching, acid regurgitation, loss of appetite,etc In the case of undigested dross, there will be abdominal distension, facial edma and hypochondriac pain, whereas, in the case of undigested essence, there will be epigastric distension, loss of appetite, general emaciation and hypochondriac pain.
For treatment, cold food and food that is difficult to be digested should avoided. Mutton, fish, wild ox beef, hot cake made of highland barley are preferred with chips of ginger added. Regular daily life is encouraged. Sleeping during daytime, or in a damp and cold place, or in a windy location, is discouraged. exercise is encouraged, such as mild physical movements, taking a walk until slight sweating occurs. Severe physical activities are prohibited.
For medication, Si-wei-guang-ming-yan Decoction, Liu-wei-neng-xiao P0wer (see above) are prescribed; Bai-gan-lu Bolus (lime, wild ginger, halitum Fructus Hippophae rhamnoides, Piper Longi), Shi-wei-mu-xiang Powder (radix Vladimiria, Fructus Phillanthus, Semen Punica, Herba Corydalis siberica, Frutus Elletaria, Piper Longi, Semen Przewalskia, Semen Myrsine, Fructus Terminatia chebula, bezoar) are applied. Common salt or pebbles, after being heated up,can be used to wrap the waist. For severe cases, catharsis and emesis, or moxibustion at the stomach region can also be used. However, emesis and catharsis should be strictly indicated only under the necessary conditions.
