Tibetan Medicine,Febrile Syndromes

Ever since ancient times, Tibetan medicine did have deep investigation intfebrile syndrome, which was differentiated into many kinds of fever.

The etiology of febrile syndrome is divided into internal causes and external causes. In the internal category, mostly it is due to functional disturbance of mkhris pa plus emotional factors, mainly anger (rage). For external causes, it includes immoderate meals, addiction to spicy-hot, sour, or salty foods, meats liquors and crude brown sugar, overstrain, violent exercises, sleeping under strong sunshine, digging hard earth beyond one's own capacity. Sometimes, injuries like falling from horseback or over a cliff, or being hit by a stone or bar are also included. In short, the combination of both can cause febrile disorders.

GeneraUy speaking, the manifestations of febrile disorders are rapid-tense-floating pulse, yellow-thick-greasy tongue coating, deep yellow urine with heavy odor and vapor, general fever, dryness and thirst, coughing, yellow-sticky sputum, unease sleep, sometimes sweating with a bad odor.

In Tibetan medicine, febrile disease can be classified into different types based on the time of its onset and its natures as follows.

Immature Fever
This is a kind of febrile disease at its initial stage, mostly occurring at dusk. Its manifestations include aversion to cold, arthralgia, slightly turbid urine, prickly tongue surface, slender-rapid pulse. It is claimed in Tibetan medicine that this disorder is caused by abnormal functions of badkan and dung, which occur on the basis of disturbance of mkhris pa.

For its treatment, wearing of warm clothes is important, frequent drinking ofcool boiled water is encouraged. Vigorous physical labor should be avoided.

Liquor is prohibited, as are butter and cheese and foods of cold nature. It's better to stay in a warm dry place. Topical application can also be used, i. e., rubbing butter on the soles and palms, or a hot compress on the stomach.

For medication, Si-wei-zang-mu-xiang Decoction (Radix Inula, Semen Rubus,Caulis Tinospora, wild ginger), Qi-zhen Decoction (the above Decoction plusFructusTerminalia bellirica, Fructus Phyllanthi). In case the pattern of fever isnot certain, a diagnostic test with bone soup can be administered. When thepatient feels ameliorated after drinking the soup, it is a rlung case; suppose thepatient feels aggravated, it is a malignant fever; when there is no change, it is adisease at the blood level.
