No. 1 Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) 9 g;
No. 2 Paofuzi (RadixAconiti Praeparatae) baked 9 g;
No. 3 Xixin (Herba Asari) 3 g.
Administration: Decoct the above drugs in water for oral application.
Actions: Purging away accumulation of cold and dispelling cold to relieve pain.
Clinical Application: This recipe is used to treat syndrome of interior excess due to cold accumulation, marked by abdominal pain, constipation, hypochondriac pain, fever, cold limbs, whitish and greasy fur, taut and tense pulse.
It is applicable to appendicitis, biliary colic, chronic dysentery, acute ileus, and adhesive ileus, etc., which chiefly manifest abdominal pain, constipation, whitish fur, taut and tense pulse which pertain to syndrome of cold accumulation in the interior. In case of severe abdominal pain, add Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi) to warm the interior and relieve pain. In case of abdominal distention and fullness with thick greasy fur, which is indicative of excessive accumulation of cold, add Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis) and Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus) to promote the flow of qi.
Elucidation: The syndrome is due to accumulated cold leading to functional disorder of yang-qi as well as the obstructed flow of fu-qi. It should be treated by means of dispelling cold and relieving pain.
The first two ingredients act as monarch drug, the former capable of removing pathogenic accumulation to relieve constipation, while the latter warming the interior to dispel cold. Ingredient No.3 functions as adjuvant drug to help No. 2 dispel the interior cold. The cold nature of the first ingredient, when in compatibility with the rest two who are pungent and hot in nature, can be restricted but with the purgative function well preserved. Such compatibility is known as "Restricring the unfavorable property with the favorable presewed."
Cautions: The dosage of drugs with warm nature must be larger than that of those with cold nature. Besides, it is contraindicated for those with syndrome of deficient yang-qi due to internally accumulated cold.
