Sino-western Joint Treats Hepatitis
General measures. Bed rest should be at the patient's option during the acute initial phase of the disease when the symptoms are most severe. Bed rest beyond the most acute disease phase is not warranted. However, return to normal activity during the convalescent period should be gradual. If nausea and vomiting are significant problems, or if oral intake is substantially decreased, the intravenous administration of 10% glucose solution is indicated.

If the patient shows signs of impending coma, protein should be temporarily interdicted and gradually reintroduced and increased as clinical improvement takes place. In general, dietary management consists of giving palatable meals as tolerated, without overfeeding. Patients with infectious hepatitis should avoid strenuous physical exertion, alcohol, and hepatotoxic agents. While the administration of small doses of oxazepam or phenobarbital is safe (since they are not metabolized by the liver), it is recommended that morphine sulfate be avoided.

Corticotropin and corticosteroids. Although these agents have been recommended by some authors for the treatment of fulminant hepatitis, controlled studies have demonstrated no benefit in patients with severe viral hepatitis treated relatively early in the course of the disease.
