For essential properties, the book explains that this means, when the tastes are similar, yet their properties are different when the drug is "digested." Below is the summary for the essential properties based on the recognition, title anddrug nature.

There are eight kinds of essential properties of materia medica.Property of producing location: materia medica produced in a cold location possess the power of the moon and are very cold. Herbs produced here are of best quality, while those produced in warm locations, even if in the same place, are inferior and cannot be used. Herbs produced on a slope facing the sun possess the power of the sun and are the best quality heat herbs; a cool drug produced in the same place would be of inferior quality.
