Absorb the unprocessed iron filings with a magnet. Sieve it and the filings are ready for use. Don't prepare this in summer, because chebula is liable to ferment.
Semen Crotonis: Remove the kernel and skin and then immerse the croton with alcohol or other liquor. Filter with a gauze, then discard the liquor. Put the croton into an earthen or iron pot. Fry with a slow fire but stop just before its color changes. It's ready for use.
Sulfur: First decoct it together with Rhizoma Acorus tatarinowii and Rhizoma Imperatae. Discard the residue. Immerse sulfur for a whole day in the solution so that its toxicity and smell are gone. Cook it over a fire three times until there is no longer any smell and no scorching appears.
