The goal of any investigation is exploitation and utilization. Investigation on the resources of Tibetan materia medica first focused on species, distribution,growing environment, reserves, production, traditional folk experiences and applications. Specimens or samples should be collected in the investigation so as to offer scientific basis for research on phytochemistry, pharmacology, clinical, productive, biotechnical sciences, and domestication or introduction of new species.
For decades, various institutions and scholars have made extensive investigations on the resources of Tibetan materia medica with the following achievements.
Increase in the Group Structure of Pharmacological Resources and Species
Occupying about a quarter of Chinese territory, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has an extensive area, with complex natural conditions, special climatic factors, an area spanning the tropical temperate and frigid temperate zones and a unique geographical position as the "Roof of the World." As a result, there is a great variety of plants with many specific species.
Based on the available materials, there are 191 families, 682 genera, about 3,000 species of plant herbs. Among them, there are fungus, including 14 families, 35 genera, 50 species; lichen, including four families, four genera, six species; bryophyte, five families, five genera, five species; perydophyte, including 30 families, 35 genera, 118 species; germnosperm plant, including five families, 47 genera and three varieties of species; angiosperm plant, including 131 families, 581 genera, 2,495 species and 141 varieties.
