Local And Ethnic Features Of Chinese Ethnic Minority Medicine
Medicine and healing have always played a central role in human civilization. Before the birth of synthetic medicine in the 19th century, practically every civilization around the world employed herbs and plants to deal with diseases. With the development of modern science, technology and medicine, some old traditional medicines have disappeared from history and some have evolved by absorbing the teachings of modern scientific medicine. However, some traditional medicines remain true to their original principles and continue to display their unique character today. Chinese traditional medicine is one such culture.

China's traditional medicine comprises three distinct aspects: traditional Chinese medicine, national medicine and folk medicine. National medicine refers to the traditional medicine of Chinese minority ethnic groups. As a united, multi-national country, the Chinese nation comprises the Han ethnic group and 55 minorities. These minorities have accumulated a rich storehouse of medical knowledge and practical experience accumulated over the course of many centuries. Traditional medicine forms a key element in the rich tapestry that is Chinese ethnic culture.

Medicine is a fundamental necessity of human civilization. Man has from the very beginning been engaged in a constant struggle with nature and the diseases and infections that have caused so many deaths to humans. Humankind's will to survive is one of the prime driving factors in the development of medical knowledge.

Medicine goes hand in hand with the life that different peoples lead. Ethnic medicine is a manifestation of the collective wisdom of a people: the result of the experiences obtained from the long struggle of Chinese minorities with disease and death. It is deeply rooted in the cultural, religious and social life of individual ethnic groups.

Ethnic medicine also has a very much localized character. The development and
evolution of medicines differs from one people to another; from one civilization to another, differences can most clearly be seen in the areas of medical techniques, methods and medicines prescribed. This is only natural since different ethnic groups have different natural environments, modes of production, living conditions and diseases, to say nothing of the influence of philosophy and religion.
